Mommy Stands Up - Being Your Child's Advocate: Guest Blogger Alicia Romano Mom, Wife and Entrepreneur

I asked Alicia to guest blog because I really admired the way she goes to bat for her children, all her children.  In general, I love her passion for life, for family, and her strong will and perseverance that spills over into her life and that of her families.  I honestly feel that she is the wielding force behind all things Romano.  I love her and think shes an incredible woman and to that end, I wanted to share her with you.

Alicia writes:
I, like many of you who are reading this, am a parent. I have four wonderful children the oldest being 10 years, and the youngest is 9 months. My oldest, a boy, has ADHD. I refused to see the facts and he was diagnosed when he was almost 7. Yes, I medicate my son year round. But this isn't an entry about the joys or the evils of parenting an ADHD child. This is a post about how over the years, even before the diagnosis, I have stuck up for him, went to bat for him. There were times when I was the only one who did (my husband doesn't count. lol). Because at the end of the day, be it with a coach, a teacher, or even the grandparents, it's my responsibility to speak up for my son. I am his advocate.

I was brought up to question authority but ultimately do as I was told. I was taught that I needed to respect my teachers and my elders. I called everyone Mister and Misses, I answered with Sirs and Ma'ams. Even now if I met with someone who is obviously my senior, I have a hard time calling them by their first names. I don't think it is a bad way to be raised, and I am instilling this into my children. So the first time I had to step up to the plate, and talk to a person in authority about my son, it was hard. Hard, but completely necessary. He was growing more and more frustrated, and I needed to help him. It was with his Kindergarten teacher. I tried the laid back approach, "Well, if that is what you think is right." I tried the blowing it off approach, "They just don't get him" I even tried the Momma Bear approach. "I'm sorry if my son doesn't fit into your tidy little box. Deal." Nothing I was doing was helping. I felt as if my hands were tied. I mean, these people were the ones that were with him for 6+ hours a day. These were the ones that dealt with him more, and were more a part of his life than I was.

And then, it was like a light bulb went off in my head, and I slammed on the brakes. My eureka moment was when he was in his second year of the first grade, after I was blind sided by the school counselor and principal. (This memory is burned into my head. They had called me up to the school under a pretext that my son needed something from me. I walked over a mile with my youngest at the time who was barely three, in the 20 degree temperatures. Upset doesn't even scratch the surface of what I was feeling.) They wanted to meet with me, to talk about my parenting skills, and give me information about where my husband and I could take classes. The counselor also wanted to give me information about enrolling my son in counselling sessions. I lost my mind. I told them that there was nothing wrong with my son. I told them that it was the school's responsibility to provide not only academics but a positive social setting as well. My husband and I already had made an appointment with a pediatric neurologist to have him tested for ADHD. I told both of them this. They basically told me that I was imagining it, and it came full circle back to my parenting skills. The counselor even mentioned that when you are not mature enough to have a baby and raise a child, situations like this occur. I threw my drivers licence at her (I was 30), and brought up my daughter. My daughter was in Kindergarten at the time. They had no idea who she was. I made a flippant comment about that being a good thing. I asked them how it could be my parenting skills when they had no clue who she was yet they are being raised in the same house with the same rules. I told them that instead of throwing accusations around, maybe we should work together as a team for my son.

The meeting accomplished squat, but it was like the flood gates had opened, and I realized I could stand up to authority figures for my son. Holy Crap, I wasn't a person not in authority. I had the most powerful authority of all. I was his parent. I was their equals. My babes are precious and I am entrusting them to you. You damn well better treat them well. Now when we get a report from school saying that he is jerking around in class, I make sure his teachers know that I won't take any bullshit from them. If he is screwing up (he does like to be the class clown) then take care of it. If it has something to do with his ADHD, I will take care of it. But don't you dare label him. Don't you dare be nasty to him. Don't you dare treat him with anything less than the respect he deserves. I know he gives it to you. That is the one thing I have heard over and over again, how polite and respectful my son is, and he deserves the same in return. Don't get me wrong, I know that there are teachers out there that will not like my kids. Coaches out there who will grumble when they see their names on the roster, but the fact of the matter is, it doesn't matter if you like my kid or not.

Part of the definition of the word advocate means: 1) a person who speaks or writes in support or defense of a person, cause, etc. (usually fol. by of ): an advocate of peace. 2) a person who pleads for or in behalf of another; intercessor. That is what we have to do. We have to stand up for our children.

Because honestly, if you aren't your child's advocate, who is?

What goes up.. must come down??

It is hard to believe that Christmas has come and gone so very quickly.  As much as I love the preparation that goes into making Christmas a special holiday for my family.  I kind of hate that flip side, taking it all down and storing it again for another year.  I fear that if I didn't have a Martha Stewart alter ego, my decorations might stay up til the following year.  Somehow, I know that the homeowners association would not go for that, lol.

A Comparison Of Rices for
Diabetes Meal Plans

Written by Sejal Dave, MS, RD/LD, CDE of HealthCastle.com
Published in September 2010

(HealthCastle.com) Rice is a staple food that is eaten all around the world. It's a cereal grass that is cultivated for its edible grain. Although the definition of rice is quite straightforward, the different varieties and forms can make it difficult to choose what's best for a diabetes meal plan. The following list provides a breakdown of popular rice varieties and the amount of carbs and glycemic index for each.

4 Rice Options for Healthy Meals

  • Basmati Rice

Basmati RiceBasmati rice has longer grains or kernels than other rice varieties. It's known for its distinct flavor and aroma - the taste has been compared to roasted nuts or popcorn. Basmati rice is predominantly used in Indian cuisine, but can be used with various dishes. The kernels cook lengthwise, which results in long, free-flowing rice that is fluffy rather than sticky. Basmati rice is available in both brown and white varieties.

In 1 cup cooked: 44 grams of carbs, 1 g of fiber, glycemic index = 58

  • Wild Rice

Wild RiceWild rice is known for its nutty flavor and chewy texture. It's made up of four different types of grasses from the genus Zizania. It is native to the area around the Great Lakes, where Native Americans harvest it, so it is also known as Indian Rice. Because of the popularity of wild rice, it's also commercially produced (i.e. not wild anymore) and readily available.

In 1 cup cooked: 35 grams of carbs, 3 g of fiber, glycemic index = 57

  • Sweet, Sticky, or Waxy Rice

Sticky RiceSweet, sticky, or waxy rice is a short-grain Asian rice, which, as its name implies, is sticky and gelatinous. It can have a sweeter taste than other rices and can be used as a savory side dish or as a dessert, depending on the cuisine. It has a higher glycemic index value than other rice varieties. Sweet rice is often considered to be high in gluten, but this is not the case. It is gluten-free and safe for people who have gluten-sensitivity.

In 1 cup cooked: 37 grams of carbs, 1.7 g of fiber, glycemic index = 86

  • Black Rice

Black RiceBlack rice is unique not only for its color, but also because it's high in bran and antioxidants. It is described as having a nutty, floral taste that's almost fruity. Although it's not as common as other rice types, its popularity is increasing because of its healthy profile. According to Chinese legend, black rice was only for Emperors because of its high nutrient content, rare color, and highly unusual taste.

In 1 cup cooked: 32 grams of carbs, 2 g of fiber, glycemic index = 78

The Bottom Line
A diabetes meal plan can definitely include rice - in fact, it's part of the grain/starch food group, which makes up a large part of a balanced meal plan. For people with diabetes, the focus should be on portion control and individual taste preference. The glycemic index can help guide your choice, but remember that each person responds differently to foods. It is best to check your blood sugar level two hours after a meal to see how you respond to rice and other foods.

My note - As a diabetic I am always looking for food choices that will make my wife easier.  I am also always searching for things that my family will eat as well, so I dont feel like a short order cook.

Going to the Fair...

Early on in our dating .. Anwar and I accepted the fact that on Friday night's we were just plain pooped.  I mean we were totally and completely exhausted.  So as a rule, we generally don't try to do too much on Fridays.  But, since I had my surgery last weekend, and was out of it.  We had to push back taking the kids to the Fair.

Our plan was to make the Annual Gwinnett County Fair a tradition for our family.  However, last year morning sickness trumped tradition.  So last night we loaded up the girls and headed for the fair.  Jaime was 3 the last time we went and I don't think she really remembered.  But, we tried to get her excited and tell her as best we could what to expect.  However, I don't think that anything that we said adequately described her first look at all the lights, the noise, and the sheer excitement that is in the air at the fair.

My little girl who is generally pretty.. cautious and even a little timid was mesmerized.  We ate first and she could not even focus on that task because there was so much going on around her.  She wanted to ride all the little kiddy rides, and some of the big kiddy rides which we had to deny her on.  But, she was a BEAST.. lol.

One of the kiddy rides just looked to me as something that could result in a potential melt down, for several reasons.  The first one being that she had to go on it all alone, no parental units, and the second one being, it went kind of fast and dipped a little low.  But, even after Mommy's "Are you sure, they won't stop the ride just for you " speech, she choose to go.  My brave angel girl..  She had a good time, and as I stood on the side lines.. holding on to the stroller too tight, and balancing Morgan on my hip, I swear I felt over bump and curve with her.  When she got off I asked her if she was scared and she said "a little bit", and pointed to the next ride she wanted to go on.

Its an amazing thing watching life through the eyes of your toddler.  It should be nothing new to me, but Anthony is 14 now, and its been a while since I have experienced... it..

My baby girl even did amazingly well, she didn't know which way to look with soo much going on.. but she seemed to just be enjoying being out in the night air...

Seemed like a great way to welcome in falll...

First Dayz of School...

First Days of School-

Last month both Jaime and Anthony started back to school.  Jaime in Kindergarden and Anthony in High School and even though that stretch is such a large one that it is almost comical.  I found myself having a lot of anticipation for the both of them.

For my Kindergarden baby, I worried about the adjustment to a new school and new children.  I worried about the difference in the demographics of the children that she knew vs those at this school.  I even worried about the level of responsiblity that would be put on her at only 5.  I worried about her being able to carry her tray, open her milk, not spill, etc.  I worried about her speech hindering her from being able to select what she wanted to eat.  I worried about her speech not being where I had hoped that it would be upon her starting Kindergarden.  And, how long the school would take before they got her into In School Speeech Therapy.  I worried about having to pull her out of school for her Private Speech Therapy and what if any stigma would be attached to her for needing extra help.

I talked myself up and down my worries in the weeks leading up to her starting school.  And, the first day I went in late, so that I could go with her and even though I could feel  apprehension, which was in all honesty probably a direct reflection of my apprehension.  She did well, she was able to get over her fear and she didn't shed one tear.  That set my mind at ease.  I thought of her several times during that day because I wondered if I would get a call, how her day went etc.  I called her as soon as I knew the Nanny had picked her up from school, and she was soo happy and chatty and I was pleased.  Crisis Averted.

With my High Schooler.. I worried about the adjustment from big fish to little fish.  I worried about the AP classes that they put him in this year, and whether or not he was ready to step up to the plate.  I worried about his basic laziness, and wondered if this year he would stop procrastinating and start to use the study habits that he had been taught.  I wondered if he would come in to his own, enough for me to start giving him some real freedom and real responsibility.  I even thought about the fact during the next year he would be eligible for a work permit and a driving permit.. Scary Stuff..  He did ok on his first day too.. and is still finding his way on the other things..

I know that someone said that being a parent is allowing your heart to walk around outside your body, and that is soo true.  It is one of the scariest jobs that I have ever had.  There is not a day that goes by that I am not thinking of 1 or 3 of them through out every hour of every day.  I know that it is my hope and desire to grow up strong, well adjusted people who are strong enough to pursue their goals and reach them.  Thats a tall order.. but by the grace of God...

Fall, one of my favorite seasons...

Theres something about the colors changing in the fall, and the briskness of the air that makes it an enjoyable time of year.  I can remember how much I loved the pumpkin patch when I was a young child of school age.  Its also around this time of year that my sweetheart, Jaime was born.

She was born on October 28th, my Halloween baby.  Stuck in bed today recovering from Major Surgery, I have spent a good portion of my day, doing some retail therapy.  Picking out some signature pieces for my little girl that scream " My Momma thinks I am a diva".

Here are some of the things that I came up with it.

The joys of dressing.. little girls....

My Secret Love Affair...

with Google.

For as long as I can remember, I have been a fan of all things Google.  Lets face it Google introduces the highest level of functionality to email(s), to phones, to maps, etc. etc.  There just really isn't anything that I have been apart of that was kin to google that I didn't thoroughly enjoy.

Part of being an entrepreneur with  a small business is definitely trying to compete on the same level as the big companies.  But, its  hard to do without being willing and able to spend large amounts of cash.  But, now through innovative services such as Google Wave, or Google Voice, Google Reader and Documents, Calendars that sync to our blackberries and 4G Devices.  It is just soo much easier.  And, it's FREE, I almost forgot to write that part.

I could attempt to try to explain all the many facets that these various softwares have to offer, but I know I couldn't do it justice.

So, if you have NEVER listened to me before.  In your free time start reading the Google Blog, see what is available to you, right under your very NOSE..

Then get back to me, tell me how Google has helped the functionality of your business, or your home life...

I can't wait to hear from you guys..

Websites that I frequent and sometimes love lol ... Thursday...

I am not even going to break these down into categories, if you want to know what they are about you simply have to look.

Time to Press the Reset Button....

August 16, 2010
A New Approach

Taking a Break from What You Are Doing

Sometimes we need to step back from what occupies our minds and take a break much like touching the reset button.

Sometimes we can get so wrapped up in our thoughts that we wind up going round in round in circles, finding it difficult to concentrate on things and, because we are so distracted, not really accomplishing much. There may be signals—mental, emotional, and physical—that tell us we need to slow down and relax. Since we are so involved in things that are external to us, however, we may easily overlook what is really going on inside of us. It is during these times that we need to step back from the things that occupy our minds and take time out to connect with our inner self, giving our minds, bodies, and spirits the time they need to reenergize and heal.

At first it may seem that by taking a break we may not be as productive as we would initially like. In reality, a healthy period of rest is something that gives us a real sense of the unlimited nature of our true potential. Spending a couple of minutes walking outside, doing a few yoga poses, meditating, or simply becoming attuned to the rising and falling of our breath enables us to let go of our worries. This act brings our focus back to the things that are truly essential for us, such as our sense of oneness with the universe and our inner peace and well-being. As we begin to get in touch with this part of ourselves, we will find that our usual everyday troubles and worries become less critical and that we not only have much more room in our lives to really reflect on the issues that mean the most to us, but we are also able bring to all the situations we encounter a much more positive and healthy outlook.

Giving ourselves respite from our daily concerns is like giving a gift to ourselves. By stepping away from the problems that seem to saturate our thoughts, we lessen the weight of our troubles and instead become more receptive to the wisdom and answers the universe has to offer us.

I know I have been quiet this last week or sooo, I was running like crazy, and now I am resetting.  More on the baby blessing to follow very sooon...

Things that make you go..... Yummy!!!

Part of my New Year's Resolution this year was to surround myself only with the things that I love, as much as it is possible.  And, to that end, I have found some of the most divine things to eat this year, that not only taste good but are healthier options than the things I had been eating in the past.

1 - Four Egg Cheese Souffle - from Panera..
2 - Mango Shake - Starbucks
3 - Skinny Iced Caramel Macchioto - Starbucks
4 - Low Fat Strawberry Scone - Panera
5 - Low Fat Cinnamon Coffee Cake - Starbucks
6 - Shaken Passion Lemonade Tea - Starbucks
7 - Spinach Egg White & Feta Cheese Wrap - Starbucks

IN MY DEFENSE:  Some of these may not be super healthy, but they are a healthier option for me, lol.   Can you imagine what I was eating before??

Passing the Diaper Bag

As a self proclaimed Control Freak, it is always hard for me to both ask for and receive help, after all I really can do everything myself.  After being a single mom for over 8 years and having to do whatever I had to do to make things work, this is still something that I struggle with.

Yesterday was Morgy's 4 month appointment and I really wanted to be there, but I had to take off last Friday to register the other kid's for school.  So I had to let Daddy go by himself.  I wrote a long list of questions that I wanted answered.  And, I put the reigns in Dad's capable hands, and he handled it.  But, when he called to give me all the information, I found that I had more questions based on the doctors answers.   I felt like I needed more information or that I would have handled the appointment differently.  And, I felt myself getting my back up.  Then, I had to sit back and acknowledge how great it is to have a husband who can fill in for me when I can not be there.  And, how amazing it is that our children's well being is just as important to him as it is to me.  And, at that moment I realized that whatever I needed to know could be answered by a simple email to the pediatrician, and that I was blessed.

I never even said a word to Daddy because the bottom line is that his best really was good enough...

Setting the Stage for Baby's First Pics

People say that I live every moment of my life, as if it is a big event.  I personally, see no issue with that.  I wish that I had always taken the time to realize how much the little things in life make up the big things.  Taking time to celebrate our children is one of the most important things that a parent can do.

Morgan will be four months old tommow, and although we have a million pics of her, we still haven't done a professional photo shoot. I didn't want her pictures to just be average, because she is anything but.  So after spending a lot of time on my Favorite site etsy.com, I found some cute props for her first photo shoot.

Check out of few of the ones that I loved!!

For the Love of Ice Cream....

For me, there are lots of memories of Summer that somehow include Ice Cream.  Whether it was coming in from playing outside and eating ice cream.  Going out for Ice Cream with my family on the weekends, or Ice Cream Cones on the back porch with my sister.

I loved ice cream.  As an adult, I guess I don't love it quite as much.[currently, fighting the battle of the bulge]  But, some days there is nothing better than that creamy, cold.. goodness.
Always looking for different ideas for Kiddie Birthday Parties, or even parties that will serve as Team Building Experiences, I ran across this one.   What do you all think, is it a winner?

Sweet Nothings....

I am truly enjoying this "new relationship", especially the way he speaks to me in that sweet baratone voice.  Always soo very willing, to make my wish his command.  So unselfish, wanting nothing more than to please me, over and over and over again.

Get your minds out the gutter, I am taking about my new SUV and ONSTAR...

How to Skinny Your Beverage -- Useful Info I Found on Starbucks.com

How to Skinny Your Beverage

You've probably heard of our sinfully delicious, guilt-free Skinny Lattes – available in Caramel, Vanilla, Hazelnut and Cinnamon Dolce. These treats each come in around 90 calories, 0g fat and 9g protein for a Tall (12 fl oz) serving. Plus they have about 30% of your U.S. daily value in calcium.

But with a few simple substitutions, you can make just about any drink Skinny. One of my favorites is a Skinny Caramel Macchiato. It's not on the menu – it's simply a Caramel Macchiato made with nonfat milk and sugar-free vanilla syrup. You can still keep the caramel drizzle topping for a little added indulgence and have only about 110 calories.

Here is how to make your favorite drink Skinny:

  • Opt for nonfat milk. That saves up to 120 calories and 15g fat.
  • Switch to sugar-free syrup. That trims off about 20 calories and 5g sugar per pump of syrup!
  • Hold the whip. Whipped cream adds about 50 to 110 calories and 5 to 11g of fat to your drink.

Here are some additional ways to shave calories in your favorite drink:

  • Choose an iced drink. When you add ice, you displace some of the milk. So while you'll be missing out on a little calcium, you'll be saving a few calories. For example, a Tall Skinny Vanilla Latte is about 90 calories; the Iced version is only about 60.
  • Add espresso. An espresso shot has about 5 calories. Adding a shot of espresso displaces an ounce of the milk, which lowers the overall calories. For example, an Iced Tall Nonfat Latte is about 70 calories. Add a shot, and you have an Iced Double Tall Nonfat Latte at approximately 60 calories.
  • Ask for extra foam. The foamier the milk, the less calories in the drink. This is why a Cappuccino has fewer calories than a Caffè Latte.

A disclaimer: Calorie numbers will vary depending on the type and size of the drink, of course. Because we make our drinks by hand, nutrient values may vary, but they reflect our standard recipes and retail operating procedures.

Meet Our Newest Guest Blogger -- Guest Blog to Run on Saturday, July 31, 2010

Beth Says:
I have always loved organization, processes, and structure, because of this I pursued my Masters degree in Accounting in 2003. I spent several years in the accounting and finance fields working my way up the corporate ladder to my current role of Finance Director of International Digital Media. One day, after growing tired of working long hours for someone else, I started to appreciate and nurture my creative side by playing with color, texture, design, and of course organization. I toyed with the idea of starting an organization and interior design firm where I could design spaces that were fabulous to the eye, as well as extremely functional for an organized lifestyle. My schedule seemed so hectic that I pushed the idea away for a couple of years, but I could not stop designing spaces in my mind and in my spare time at home.

Finally in October 2009, with the knowledge of the importance of organization, an obsession with perfection, a love of interior design, and the motivation of following my dreams... Changing Spaces Design emerged! A company that combined my utmost favorite things: organization, perfection, and design. Now I use all my time and energy on creating what best fits my clients, by understanding the their wants, needs, and style. The best part of interior design is being able to create a space that reflects different aspects of me and embrace other styles that I love, whether it be contemporary, girly, masculine, Asian-inspired, Bohemian, etc. I love what I do, seeing a client who is amazed at the transformation of their space is indescribable. And all the shopping is an absolute plus! I'm currently working on an a la carte menu, as well as a photo shoot so you can see it live.

I have learned a lot, and will learn a lot more. Being a business woman, a caregiver, a friend, a sister, and a myriad of other things is hard work... but I love every minute of it. I hope you all stick around for the ride, I promise you a well styled adventure!
